📖 Quick guide

The IU marking on U-100 insulin syringes is a measure of volume: 100 IU = 1 ml. To convert a dose in mg to IU, you must know the solution concentration (mg/ml).

Formulas: volume (ml) = dose (mg) ÷ concentration (mg/ml) • IU = volume (ml) × 100. Example: a solution with 60 mg in 2 ml has a concentration of 30 mg/ml; a 2.5 mg dose equals 0.083 ml = 8.3 IU.

Attention: the same mg dose occupies different volumes depending on each product's concentration. Always check your medication label and follow your prescribing physician's guidance.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What does IU mean on the syringe?

IU (International Unit) on a U-100 syringe is a volume graduation: each IU equals 0.01 ml. The mg value depends on the solution concentration.

Why do I need the concentration?

Because mg is mass and IU/ml is volume. Without the concentration (mg/ml) no conversion is possible — the same IU count can contain completely different amounts of active ingredient.

Does this calculator replace medical advice?

No. It is strictly educational. Dose, frequency and administration must be defined by your physician based on your individual assessment.

Does it work for any injectable medication?

The math (mass ÷ concentration = volume) holds for solutions in general, but each medication has its own preparation and administration particularities. Always confirm with the professional who prescribed it.

Insulin syringe: 50 IU or 100 IU?
Choose 50 or 100 IU does not change the dose — only changes the size and scale of the syringe. Both are U-100 (100 IU per mL). The 50 IU syringe has a finer scale, which makes small doses easier to read, and holds up to 50 IU; the 100 IU syringe holds up to 100 IU.
